Mist gathered low over the barley, a silver skin that broke in slow shivers when the wind moved. Ashfield woke the way a kettle sings, not all at once but with rising comfort, smoke slipping from turf chimneys, a rooster trying to sound important, a distant laugh clipped short by a mother’s scold. The cottages were half-buried in their hills, doors painted cheerful blue or moss green, round windows blinking to the sun. Bees worked the lavender borders as if paid by the bell.
Under the old chestnut, Dorrin Dee shaved ribbons from a yew stave, each curl springing away and catching in his beard. He was not a big halfling, but his hands were quiet and sure, the hands of a man who could pull a bow from a tree as neat as a fisherman teases a trout from a stream.
